Membership is free and anyone can join – you do not have to be a Hackney resident.

Join library

Once you have applied, go to any of our library branches with your confirmation number and ID to activate your membership. You can also join in person at any of our library branches.

What can I find at the library?

As well as adult fiction and non-fiction books the library offers:

Events and activities – what’s on in Hackney libraries

Access and join a wide range of reading groups for adults and children and enjoy our programme of events celebrating culture and learning throughout the year.

Book a computer

You need your library card number and PIN to access the booking system. If you need a new library card or have forgotten your PIN, visit one of our libraries.

How long can I access a computer for?

Adults: 2 hours, children: 1 hour. Additional time is available on request.

New to computers and the internet?

Basic familiarisation sessions are available. Advance booking is required, please ask staff.

What is the cost for printing and scanning?

Black and white: 10p, colour: 50p.

Rooms for hire for meetings and events

Meeting room – capacity: 25 seated or 25 standing

  • the room is on the ground floor with two steps to the entrance
  • a removable ramp is available to provide access for wheelchair users
  • the room is beyond the library’s newspaper storage area, so access is facilitated by staff
  • free public Wi-Fi with a library membership card
  • no additional services or equipment is available other than those listed

Gallery – capacity: 130 standing or 60 seated

  • the Gallery is a large space that is suitable for art exhibitions and rehearsals, and includes a small stage area
  • the space is not suitable for parties, events likely to cause noise or disturbance to neighbours, where alcohol is sold or where tickets are sold on the door
  • free public Wi-Fi with a library membership card
  • no additional services or equipment is available other than those listed
