Hackney Light and Power
In this section:
Hackney Light and Power is our energy services arm, installing clean energy services across Hackney.
Our ambition is to:
- cover Council-owned roof spaces with solar panels
- support businesses and residents to invest in renewable technologies
- roll out electric vehicle charging points infrastructure
- invest in renewable heat generation
- establish a local government-owned energy company
Hackney Light and Power will also implement initiatives that help tackle fuel poverty and support vulnerable residents. This includes a borough-wide thermal-efficiency scheme – the Green Homes Programme, Hackney’s Community Energy Fund, and developing a pilot project to generate local renewable electricity that can be sold to residents at a discounted rate.
We want to make Hackney the most environmentally friendly borough in London.
Hackney Light and Power will support the council to meet the declared target of becoming a zero-net carbon borough by 2040.
To maximise carbon emission reduction, Hackney Light and Power will:
- invest in our local community energy sector through the Hackney Community Energy Fund with a new round each year
- continue to deliver the Green Homes Programme – the first borough-wide thermal efficiency housing program in London
- develop and expand our district heating network infrastructure
- support the roll out of electric vehicle charging points with a discounted rate for Hackney residents
- develop and implement energy conservation measures in our corporate buildings as part of the decarbonisation of energy use in these buildings
- supply the grid with green energy
- reduce fuel poverty
- improve residents’ health and well being
- promote an inclusive economy and contribute to the nationwide green agenda
- help make Hackney a sustainable, green borough
