Hackney Light and Power

Hackney Light and Power is our clean energy services team. Through it, we install renewable energy and improve energy efficiency across Hackney.

We oversee a variety of projects and are currently working on 6 initiatives across Hackney. These are:

Our goals

We want to make Hackney the most environmentally friendly borough in London. Our goal is to:

  • install solar panels on council-owned roofs
  • support non-profit organisations and residents to invest in renewable technologies and make their buildings more energy efficient
  • Increase the number of electric vehicle charging points across the borough
  • invest in renewable heat generation
  • establish a local government-owned energy company

Hackney Light and Power will also create programmes that help to address fuel poverty and support vulnerable residents. This includes:

  • delivering annual rounds of both the nationally recognised Hackney Community Energy Fund for non-profit organisations and the Green Homes programme for vulnerable homeowners and private renters
  • developing a pilot project to generate local renewable electricity that we can sell to residents at a cheaper rate than commercial energy suppliers
  • developing a pilot fuel poverty advice service to attend community spaces across the borough
  • promoting the health and well-being benefits of energy-efficient homes and a greener borough

Becoming zero-net carbon by 2040

Hackney Light and Power will help us meet our target of becoming a zero-net carbon borough by 2040.

To reduce carbon emissions, Hackney Light and Power will:

  • invest in our local community energy sector through the annual Hackney Community Energy Fund
  • continue to develop the Green Homes Programme – the first borough-wide thermal efficiency program in London for privately-owned homes
  • develop and expand our district heating network infrastructure
  • install electric vehicle charging points with a discounted rate for Hackney residents
  • develop and implement energy conservation measures in our corporate buildings as part of the decarbonisation of energy use in these buildings
  • supply the grid with green energy
  • promote an inclusive economy and support the local green jobs market
  • help make Hackney a sustainable, green borough
  • contribute to the nationwide green agenda
