Chatsworth Road Liveable Neighbourhood
We’ve agreed plans to turn the Chatsworth Road area into a ‘Liveable Neighbourhood’. This means making improvements to create streets that are safer, and more welcoming and accessible for everyone.
It’s part of our commitment to creating a safer, greener and healthier Hackney.
Find out more about what we plan to do and why.
Our aims
We aim to:
- make Chatsworth Road and the surrounding area easier to walk, wheel and cycle in
- improve journey times for buses and ambulances
- reduce traffic in the area
- improve the area as a place to visit and shop, including on market day
What’s happened so far
In January 2023, the council’s cabinet approved plans to reduce traffic and cut pollution in the Chatsworth Road area.
In summer 2023, we ran a travel survey to understand how residents and businesses travel and want to travel in the Chatsworth Road neighbourhood. Using this feedback and local traffic data, we created proposals to reduce traffic along Chatsworth Road.
We held a public consultation on these proposals in January and February 2025.
Subject to statutory processes, we aim to begin implementation of the Liveable Neighbourhood plans in August 2025. Residents and businesses in the immediate scheme area will get a letter about the work approximately 2 weeks before it begins.
Travel survey feedback
To help us make the plans for the Chatsworth Road area, we:
- sent travel surveys to local residents and businesses in June 2023
- spoke to businesses and market traders in the area to understand what they need
1,183 people took part in the survey. 746 were from the E5 0 postcode.

Consultation responses
We ran a public consultation on draft proposals from 7 January 2025 to 21 February 2025.
2,015 people took part in the consultation. 47% lived within the scheme area.
Car and van users were overrepresented in their responses. 61% said they use a car or van to get around, whilst just 38% of households in the scheme area own a car.

Next steps
A statutory consultation will now be carried out to make a legal document that is used to manage parking and traffic regulations. This is known as a Traffic Management Order.
A notice of the proposed changes will be advertised on our Active traffic orders page, where you can also find more information about the Traffic Management Order process.
Any objections or other representation can be made within 28 days from the date on the notice.
Subject to statutory processes, we will:
- send residents and businesses in the immediate scheme area a letter with details of the works
- display public notices with the exact date of when the works will begin
