Disposing of a vehicle
If you’re a Hackney resident and you’ve got a vehicle you no longer need that you’d like to dispose of, you can use our free removal and disposal service.
If your vehicle’s in Hackney but you live elsewhere, you can still take advantage of the service by paying a fee of £30.
Tear off part 9 of the V5C vehicle registration document (log book) and send us the rest along with one of the following as proof of address:
- a recent utility bill
- council tax bill
- bank statement
Complete the surrender vehicle form (or provide a covering letter addressed to London Borough of Hackney, explaining you have surrendered your vehicle to us) and send it to us.
The address on the envelope should be written exactly as “Freepost ABANDONED VEHICLES”.
You must also send the DVLA:
- a letter explaining you are surrendering the vehicle to us for disposal
- section 9 of your vehicle registration document (V5C) completed and signed
Address: DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD.
We can’t return section 9 of your vehicle registration document to the DVLA on your behalf. If you don’t sign and return it, you could be fined by the DVLA for unpaid tax duties.
Once the DVLA have received their correct paperwork and we’ve received ours, the vehicle becomes our responsibility.
Until that time, if it is parked on the public highway, it’s your responsibility to ensure it’s parked legally.
We normally remove vehicles within three working days of both sets of documents being received. However, this may take longer depending on the type of vehicle and our workload.
Please make sure there are no personal belongings in the vehicle before we take it away. We won’t contact you unless we need to ask you anything, and the vehicle will be disposed of immediately.
We will dispose of your vehicle in full compliance with environmental regulations and controls.
