Road safety when it’s dark

During autumn and winter the days are shorter, the nights are longer and the damp, colder weather means everywhere looks dull.

It’s difficult to see someone who is wearing darker clothing when the weather is wet and grey. It’s important to make yourself more visible to other road users during the darker days and at night.

During the day you should consider wearing fluorescent or brighter colours which stand out, for instance: yellow, orange, bright green, white, pink and bright red.

There are lots of brightly coloured accessories available including bags, rucksacks, scarves, baseball caps, and hats.

At night

When it’s dark fluorescent colours are less effective, but white or light colours are easier to spot.

Reflective material is most effective when it’s dark, as it reflects the light from vehicle headlights or street lights.

Consider wearing clothes or accessories with reflective material like:

  • jackets
  • trainers
  • bags
  • armbands
  • sashes
  • waistcoats

Take extra care when crossing the roads – just because you can see the traffic it doesn’t always mean the drivers and riders can see you.

When you need to cross the road at night, try to use safer places like:

  • zebra crossings
  • traffic lights
  • or near to the street lights

At night your bicycle must have a working:

  • white front light
  • red rear light
  • red reflector

Check them regularly to make sure they’re clean and working.

Take extra care and time to look for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

It’s difficult to see someone who is wearing darker clothing when the weather is wet and grey.

Make sure your headlights are on when it starts to get dark to make it easier for everyone to see you.

Wearing a white or light coloured helmet or a light coloured sash will help you stand out more.

At night consider using clothing and accessories with reflective material in them.
