Shared owners
Staircasing – buying an extra share in your property
Staircasing is the process which allows you to buy a greater proportion of your home.
If you own a leasehold flat then service charges or ground rent may still be payable even when you own the property outright. This depends on your lease agreement.
You can learn more about staircasing by reading the following guides:
If you wish to proceed with staircasing then contact the Property Sales Team via property.sales@hackney.gov.uk
Resale – selling your property
If you decide to sell your property, you must first contact us. We will attempt to find a nominee purchaser for your property within the nominee period as outlined in your lease.
If you wish to sell your shared ownership property, contact the Property Sales Team via property.sales@hackney.gov.uk
Subletting a shared ownership property
This is not permitted under the terms of the shared ownership lease – unless you have staircased to 100%.
In exceptional circumstances we will consider your request to sublet. For example, if you’re a member of the armed forces and are serving away from the area for a fixed period.
You can submit a subletting request by emailing property.sales@hackney.gov.uk
