Hoxton East travel survey

In January 2023, the cabinet approved plans to reduce traffic and cut pollution in the Hoxton East area. This will help to reduce the borough’s impact on climate change, support people to walk, wheel, shop and cycle locally and help create a greener, healthier Hackney.

In February 2024, we ran a travel survey to understand how residents and businesses travel and want to travel in the Hoxton East area. We’re reviewing the insights from this survey together with traffic counts to design several options for the area.

Our aims

We aim to:

  • making the area easier to walk and cycle
  • improve journey times for buses and ambulances
  • reduce the dominance of motor vehicles including through traffic on residential roads in the area
  • improve the area as a place to visit and shop, including on market day

Your feedback

To inform plans for the area, we sent travel surveys to local residents and businesses in February 2024. We sent:

  • 11,800 leaflets to properties in the Hoxton East area as part of the travel survey and received 337 responses
  • 195 leaflets to businesses in the Hoxton East area as part of the business travel survey and received 91 responses
  • 19 leaflets to Hoxton Street Market Traders as part of the market traders travel survey and received 18 responses

We also spoke to businesses and market traders in the area to understand their delivery and servicing needs.

What local residents, businesses and market traders told us:

  • 70% of responses from residents said they support improving walking, cycling and air quality even if it might lengthen motor vehicle journeys by a few minutes
  • most of people who responded, 3 in 5 (60%), said they walk, cycle or use a manual wheelchair for at least 20 minutes per day
  • just under 32% of people who responded said they use the entry or exit from New North Road to get to their property. This was followed by those who use Old Street and the A10, both just under 28%, followed by just above 13% who said they don’t know and 12% who said East Road
  • trees, planting and rain gardens, which can be themed as environmental, were the 2 highest responses in terms of what people who responded would like to see the council introduce more of in their local area, followed by wider pavements or more walking space and seating
  • other themes from comments included cycling infrastructure, accessibility and mobility, environmental concerns, pedestrian infrastructure, parking, public amenities, traffic and road conditions and safety concerns
  • two thirds (67%) of people who responded said they own, or have access to, a private vehicle, van or motorcycle, with just under a third who do not
  • New North Road was the most common route used by businesses to access the area. Smaller proportions of businesses responded that they use Old Street and the A10 as their entry or exit route
  • most of the traders that use a vehicle to travel to Hoxton Street Market said they use the A10 as an entry or exit route to get to their market stall

Next steps

We’re reviewing the survey feedback to help create plans to reduce traffic and lower pollution in the area.

We will speak to residents, businesses and market traders about proposals in the Hoxton East area once these are ready.

Concerns about child safety have led to us developing proposals for a School Street to protect pupils at St Monica’s Primary School.
