Dalston travel survey

In January 2023, the council’s cabinet approved plans to reduce traffic and cut pollution in the Sandringham Road area. This will help to reduce the borough’s impact on climate change. It will also support people to walk, wheel, shop and cycle locally and help create a greener, healthier Hackney.

In summer 2023, we ran a travel survey to understand how residents and businesses travel and want to travel in the Sandringham Road area. We are reviewing the survey results and traffic counts. We will use them to design options for the area.

We expect to consult residents and businesses on proposals in early 2025. Subject to the feedback in consultation, we will implement these plans for the area in 2025.

Our aims

We aim to:

  • make Sandringham Road and the surrounding area easier to walk, wheel and cycling in
  • improve journey times for buses and ambulances
  • reduce the dominance of motor vehicles, including through-traffic on residential roads in the area
  • improve the area as a place to visit and shop

Your feedback

To help shape plans for the area, we sent out surveys to local residents, businesses, and market traders in September 2023. We sent:

  • 7,500 leaflets to properties in Dalston for the residents’ travel survey and received 719 responses
  • 211 leaflets to businesses east of the A10 for the business travel survey and received 78 responses
  • 43 leaflets to Ridley Road market traders for the market traders travel survey and received 34 responses

What local residents and businesses told us:

  • 70% of responses from residents stated that they support improving walking, cycling and air quality even if it might lengthen motor vehicle journeys by a few minutes
  • the majority of people who responded (almost two thirds), stated that they walk, cycle or use a manual wheelchair for at least 20 minutes per day
  • almost two thirds of residents selected A10 and Amhurst Road as being the route they use the most to get to their properties
  • Dalston Lane was the most common route used by businesses to access the area. Smaller proportions of businesses responded that they use Amhurst Road and the A10 as their entry or exit route
  • of the traders that use a vehicle to travel to Ridley Road Market, the majority responded that they use Dalston Lane as an entry or exit route
  • while many traders use public transport, the responses show that cars or vans are the preferred way for them to bring goods to the market

Next steps

We’re reviewing the survey feedback to help create plans to reduce traffic and lower pollution in the area.

Transport for London is currently making cycling improvements at the Sandringham Road/A10 junction. This will make it safer for cyclists to cross between John Campbell Road and Sandringham Road. We expect these works to be finished in autumn.

After these improvements, we will do traffic studies in autumn. Then, we will speak with residents, businesses, and market traders about plans to reduce traffic in the Sandringham Road area.
