Plans to improve travel in Dalston
We’ve secured nearly £3 million from Transport for London (TfL) to improve travel, transport and the local environment in Dalston
We’re now asking for your feedback on the proposals as part of a public consultation.
Our aims
We aim to:
- make cycling and walking safer and easier
- reduce overall traffic in the area
- improve journey times for buses and ambulances
- improve the area as a place to visit and shop
This is part of our work to create a fairer, greener, healthier Hackney – where people can walk, wheel and shop locally, enjoy welcoming public spaces, and travel on safer, healthier streets.
Feedback from the travel survey
In summer 2023, we asked residents and businesses in the area to complete a travel survey to help us understand local people’s travel habits and views.
We sent:
- 7,500 leaflets to properties in Dalston for the residents’ travel survey and received 719 responses
- 211 leaflets to businesses east of the A10 for the business travel survey and received 78 responses
- 43 leaflets to Ridley Road market traders for the market traders travel survey and received 34 responses
What local residents and businesses told us:
- 70% of responses from residents stated that they support improving walking, cycling and air quality even if it might lengthen motor vehicle journeys by a few minutes
- the majority of people who responded (almost two thirds), stated that they walk, cycle or use a manual wheelchair for at least 20 minutes per day
- almost two thirds of residents selected A10 and Amhurst Road as being the route they use the most to get to their properties
- Dalston Lane was the most common route used by businesses to access the area. Smaller proportions of businesses responded that they use Amhurst Road and the A10 as their entry or exit route
- of the traders that use a vehicle to travel to Ridley Road Market, the majority responded that they use Dalston Lane as an entry or exit route
- while many traders use public transport, the responses show that cars or vans are the preferred way for them to bring goods to the market

Have your say
We’ve developed proposals based on the travel survey responses and local traffic data and want to hear your thoughts on them.
Find out more about the changes we’re proposing and complete our online survey on the Hackney consultation website.
Paper copies of the survey are also available at Dalston CLR James Library.
The survey closes on Sunday 24 August 2025.
