Chatsworth Road travel survey
In January 2023, the council’s cabinet approved plans to reduce traffic and cut pollution in the Chatsworth Road area. This will help to reduce the borough’s impact on climate change, support people to walk, wheel, shop and cycle locally and help create a greener, healthier Hackney.
In summer 2023, we ran a travel survey to understand how residents and businesses travel and want to travel in the Chatsworth Road neighbourhood. We’re now carefully reviewing the insights from this survey together with traffic counts to design several options for the area.
We expect to consult residents and businesses on proposals by early 2025. Subject to the feedback in consultation, we will implement the plans for the Chatsworth Road area in 2025.
Our aims
- make Chatsworth Road and the surrounding area easier to walk, wheel and cycle in
- improve journey times for buses and ambulances
- reduce traffic in the area
- improve the area as a place to visit and shop, including on market day
Your feedback
To inform plans for the Chatsworth Road area, we distributed travel surveys to local residents and businesses in June 2023 and spoke to businesses and market traders in the area to understand delivery and servicing needs.
1,183 respondents took part in the survey.
What local residents and businesses told us:
- the majority of respondents were from the E5 0 postcode area (746)
- we asked residents whether they support improving walking, cycling and air quality even if it might lengthen motor vehicle journeys by a few minutes – two thirds (66%) of respondents said they did
- while those who do not own a vehicle are much more in favour of the support to improve walking, cycling and air quality as opposed to those who own a vehicle, the majority (53%) of respondents who own or have access to a private motor vehicle also supported this statement
- the majority of respondents, 3 in 5 (60%), stated that they walk, cycle or use a manual wheelchair for at least 20 minutes per day (703)
- residents have told us they would like to see more seating and planting in the area
- we asked residents who use cars which entry/exit route for Chatsworth Road do they drive through the most – there were three possible routes to choose from – we looked at how responses varied for respondents with disabilities and car owners:
Responder group | Which entry/exit route for Chatsworth Road do you drive through the most? |

From the north (past Millfields or Lea Bridge Road) – 49% |
From the south (past Homerton Hospital, The Castle Cinema or Chats Palace) – 25%
From the west (past Powerscroft Road, Median Road or Clapton Park United Reformed Church) – 16%
Don’t know – 11% | |
Car owners

From the north (past Millfields or Lea Bridge Road) – 34%
From the west (past Powerscroft Road, Median Road or Clapton Park United Reformed Church) – 14%

What happens next
We’re analysing the detailed feedback given in the surveys and using it to develop plans to reduce traffic and cut pollution in the Chatsworth Road area.
We will carry out further traffic studies during autumn 2024. We will then consult on proposals by early 2025.
Lea Bridge Road cycle lanes/resurfacing
On Lea Bridge Road, we are currently working with TfL to construct a new segregated cycle lane. The new cycle lane means that we need to ban traffic turning right from Chatsworth Road into Lea Bridge Road and traffic turning left into Chatsworth Road from Lea Bridge Road. These restrictions, which help to keep cyclists safe, will be implemented in October 2024.
