Dalston to Lea Bridge safe cycling route (Cycleway 23)

We are working with TfL on a brand new safe cycling route between Dalston and Lea Bridge. This includes several projects to make the whole route greener and healthier such as:

new protected cycle lanes in Millfields Park – completed in 2022 – see works notification (PDF 2.2mb)
a revamped Lea Bridge roundabout, with protected bike lanes and safer crossings – construction work during 2023
a new safe cycle crossing over Kingsland Road at the Rio Cinema – not yet funded
new protected cycle lanes and rain gardens at the junction of Crossway and John Campbell Road – see works notification (PDF 717kb)
installing a new segregated westbound cycle track along Lea Bridge Road between borough boundary with Waltham Forest and Lea Bridge roundabout – see works notification (PDF 403kb)

TFL held a consultation with residents and businesses in the area. Following this, plans to implement sections of the second phase of a new cycle route between Dalston and Clapton were approved.

Proposals

The Lea Bridge Road proposals include:

installing a new westbound segregated cycle track on Lea Bridge Road, stretching from the bridge over River Lea which is the borough boundary with Waltham Forest, to Lea Bridge Roundabout
removing around 190m of existing eastbound bus lane and installing a new 120m westbound bus lane on Lea Bridge Road between the junction with Chatsworth Road and borough boundary with Waltham Forest
installing two floating bus stops to allow cyclists to safely move around the bus stops – installing Mini zebra crossings to give priority to pedestrians when crossing the cycle track to access the bus stops
removing an existing eastbound bus stop (Wattisfield Road, Stop R) on Lea Bridge road and installing a new one around 70m west of the existing location
installing a banned left hand turn from Lea Bridge Road into Chatsworth Road, to ensure motor vehicles do not cross into the new protected cycle lanes
installing a banned right hand turn from Chatsworth Road into Lea Bridge Road to reduce the signal stages at the junction and allowing traffic, particularly buses, along Lea Bridge Road to move more efficiently
refurbishing the existing footpaths and resurfacing the entire length of Lea Bridge Road
installing three new blended crossings on the southern side of Lea Bridge Road – these junctions will raise the carriageway to the same level as the footway and allow a smooth transition for pedestrians
