Mediation is an effective way of resolving disputes between neighbours. It involves an independent third party (a mediator) discussing the problem with everyone involved and helping both sides to come to an agreement. Mediation is confidential, impartial and voluntary.
A mediator will visit you in your home or at a neutral place to discuss the issues you have with your neighbour and help you to agree a way forward. You do not have to meet or sit with your neighbour during the mediation process.
Mediation can help you to:
- clarify what the problem was
- understand what was going on for your neighbour
- agree what to do next
- sort the problem out
