Re-registering a birth

A child’s birth needs to be re-registered if:

  • the baby’s father’s details were not included in the original registration and the parents now wish to add them
  • the parents have married each other since the birth

Adding a father’s details

If a father’s details were not included in the original birth registration, they can be added later by re-registering the birth. The baby’s surname can also be changed at this point, if both parents wish.

The first stage is to complete the application form, enclosing any necessary documentation. Download the form from Gov.uk.

The Registrar will then contact you with your appointment. Both parents will need to attend.

Marriages after a birth registration

If a baby’s parents subsequently marry following a birth registration, they must re-register the birth to show they have now married.

The parents must complete an application form, enclosing any necessary documentation. Download the form from Gov.uk.

The Registrar will then contact you with your appointment. Only one parent needs to attend.
