Coronavirus – Archives closed

In response to the latest government advice to combat the coronavirus outbreak, Hackney Archives will be closed to the public until further notice. Staff will be working remotely, so our archives@hackney.gov.uk email enquiry service will still be operational. However, please note that we will be unable to fully respond to enquiries that require consultation of physical records.

Loans donations and bequests

Our aim at Hackney Archives is to develop and preserve a collection which reflects all aspects of life in Hackney.

As well as collecting and preserving the formal records of the Council, we also collect records from individuals and organisations in the community.

What records are Hackney Archives interested in?

Archives are records created by people or organisations in the course of their day-to-day activities, no longer needed for current use but of long-term value as historical evidence. Archives can exist in many different formats, including handwritten, typed or printed documents, photographs, audio-visual recordings and electronic records.

What are the terms on which records can be deposited with Hackney Archives?

We usually accept records as gifts, in which case ownership passes to us.

What happens to records deposited with Hackney Archives?

When we receive records, we undertake to preserve them in suitable and secure conditions, complying with the relevant national standards for archives management. Records in our care will be sorted and catalogued by professional staff and made available to the public free of charge (subject to any reasonable requirements of privacy and confidentiality) in our search room.

How to find out more

If you’d like to talk to staff at the Archives about your records, please contact us. We’re happy to provide advice and support to any individual or organisation in Hackney about creating and preserving your own archives.
